Aistersheim Castle: the most beautiful fortification in Upper Austria

Surrounded by a moat, Aistersheim Castle is known as the most beautiful castle in Upper Austria. The complex, which combines military architecture and decorative elements, is built on a wooden pile foundation and completely surrounded by water. It was specifically constructed to take advantage of the picturesque nature that surrounds it.

After its completion, Aistersheim Castle, first mentioned in documents in 1159, became a powerful fortification on the border with Bavaria. It remained in the possession of the Aistersheim lords until 1426, when the lineage was interrupted with the death of its last representative, Heinrich von Aistersheim. In 1464, the property was purchased by Hans von Hohenfeld.

Aistersheim Castle is an exceptional example of medieval defensive architecture, beautifully complemented by elements of late Renaissance architecture. Built in the 12th century, it is one of the oldest structures in the town

A fire in 1771 caused significant damage to Aistersheim Castle. As a result, extensive reconstruction was necessary, during which the external facades were restored in the Baroque style. The work was carried out in the first half of the 19th century. After the death of the last representative of the Hohenfeld family, the castle changed hands several times.

Today, inside the castle, one can see luxurious furniture, paintings, Italian frescoes, and a chapel

Of particular note is the two-story knight’s hall, which occupies the entire narrow side of the eastern wing. It is considered one of the most important halls of the Renaissance period in Upper Austria. The Italian-style frescoes on the ceiling depict scenes from mythology.

In the northeast corner tower, there is a palace chapel, under the dome of which an altar from 1658 is installed, adorned with life-size statues. The rest of the furnishings, including a rare portable organ, also date back to the 17th century. The priest’s room is accessed through an impressive Renaissance door with inlays and carvings.
